SYDNEY, N.S. — Watching the first concrete being poured on Friday for Cape Breton’s new cancer centre was an emotional yet satisfying moment for Leah Walsh-Wilton.
“Both of my parents were diagnosed with cancer,” said the Glace Bay mother. “My mom in 2006, my dad about 10 years later. I lost both of my parents to their cancer battles.”
Despite that heartache, Walsh-Wilton decided to join the centre’s redevelopment team as a voluntary patient advisor so she could help others. She uses her experience within the system to help make the lives of future patients a little easier.
