Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a long walk through the snow in a Membertou neighbourhood —but filled with thoughts of federal government plans to spur new home construction in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
On Thursday, Trudeau announced new housing collaborations between the federal government, the CBRM and Membertou First Nation to create 367 new housing units in Nova Scotia over three years, aiming to stimulate the construction over 3,286 new homes within the next decade to address the housing demand in the region.
“We’ve now signed well over 50 agreements with municipalities and communities right across the country,” Trudeau said on Thursday, joined by Sydney-Victoria MP Jaime Battiste, CBRM Mayor Amanda McDougall-Merrill, Membertou chief and CEO Terry Paul and Cape Breton-Canso MP Mike Kelloway.
“And what they’re focused on is actually looking at the tools that municipalities like the CBRM and Membertou First Nation have to unlock even more housing faster in their communities.”
