Cape Breton Regional Hospital
A major expansion of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney will include a new Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Energy Centre and Clinical Services Building that will house a new emergency department, critical care department, inpatient beds, surgical suites and maternal/newborn services.
Nova Scotia Community College
Construction on Nova Scotia Community College’s new, contemporary Sydney Campus began in 2020. The vision of the project is to create a campus with a dynamic learning environment that will attract students from across the province. It will have a modern design, open spaces, state-of-the-art technology, and be built in accordance with accessibility standards and guidelines following the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification Program and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) environmental standards.
Glace Bay Hospital
Opened in 1986, Glace Bay Hospital is a community hospital that serves Glace Bay, Dominion, Reserve Mines, Donkin, Port Morien, and surrounding areas. It currently has 44 acute care beds and 18 long-term care beds on 4North, a transitional long-term care unit.
The renovations and additions to the Glace Bay Hospital includes the the emergency department and surgical suites.
New Waterford Community Hub
As part of the CBRM Health Care Redevelopment Project, New Waterford and the surrounding area will have a new, modern health centre and a 60-bed long-term care home. Both will be built on the Breton Education Centre school site, along with a new, modern school, creating a community hub. The project also includes 12 (sub-acute) short-stay beds.
The community hub model (health centre, long-term care home, and school) will create hands-on learning opportunities and new programming for students in health-care related fields. It also allows for opportunities to share facilities and maintenance services.
Northside Health Complex
As part of the CBRM Health Care Redevelopment Project, Northside residents will have a new, modern health centre and a 60-bed long-term care home. Both will be built in the Northside Business Park, along with a new laundry centre. The project also includes 12 (sub-acute) short-stay beds.

The Mobile Training Centres (MTCs) are part of the Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council’s ‘Bridging Community and Industry’ training program. This program is co-funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia. The purpose is to deliver industry-based training, identified by labour market needs, for new entrants to the sector/trade with a focus on addressing barriers for underrepresented groups (traditionally marginalized).
The Early Learning and Child Care Major Infrastructure Program will provide $25 million to fund new construction or major renovations that will create new child-care spaces. Priority will be given to projects that serve diverse or vulnerable communities, communities with low child-care coverage rates and projects in publicly owned facilities.

Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister John Lohr and Halifax MP Andy Fillmore, on behalf of Sean Fraser, federal Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, announced today, February 23, the locations of new public housing units in Halifax Regional Municipality and 25 new modular housing units that will be installed in eight communities across the province by end of March.
